Question
What could be the causes of low platelet counts in children?
Answer
Low platelet counts may be due to disorders in platelet production, such as aplastic anemia, acute leukemia, acute radiation sickness, etc.; they could also be a result of increased platelet destruction, like primary thrombocytopenic purpura or hypersplenism; or excessive consumption, such as disseminated intravascular coagulation or familial thrombocytopenia.
